SPAR hosting Welcome Back Party Jan. 30
Chili Cook-off prior to event; Lunar New Year next month

Hey, North Lake! Administrators have a few words for you: Welcome back to a new semester.

And they’ve scheduled some surprises for you.

Over the next two months, Student Programs and Resources, or SPAR, will host a series of fun events.

First up are a Chili Cook-off and Welcome Back Party Wednesday, Jan. 30, in the bookstore-cafeteria foyer. The Chili Cook-off will run from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

Program Specialist Drena Settles said it’s not too late for students and staff with interesting recipes to enter the contest.
"Let's begin 2008 with something hot, tasty and spicy like a chili cook-off!" she said. "Come on, sign up! You can do it."

The deadline for all participants is Jan. 28. The judges will grade entries on originality, taste, color, smell, texture and consistency.

Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third-place winners, Settles said. The cost is 50 cents per sample of chili. And North Lake’s student clubs can use the event to raise funds.

The one-hour Welcome Back Party will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the same foyer, officials said.

Complimentary refreshments, snacks and pizza will be provided.

A sketch artist will entertain students with free drawings, officials said, and information tables will be set up. If any club or organization would like to reserve a table, contact William Videtto, student services assistant, to sign up.

In February, SPAR will help students celebrate the start of a different new year – The Year of the Rat. The Lunar New Year celebration will be held in the cafeteria Feb. 7, from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

The Rat is the first cycle of the Chinese zodiac and is eagerly awaited. Festivities will begin with complimentary tea, egg rolls and fortune cookies.

Tai chi instructor Dr. Henry Su and his students will demonstrate martial arts, and a Lion Dance will be performed.
