North Lake College Hosts Former Assistant Secretary of Education for Civil Rights

IRVING, Texas.April 6, 2004: North Lake College hosts Dr. Norma Cantu, former Assistant Secretary of Education for Civil Rights under the Clinton administration, on Thursday, April 15. She will speak on “Valuing Diversity: From Pre-School to the Workplace.” The presentation will be in the college’s Performance Hall from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. with a reception following in the Hall’s foyer.

Dr. Cantu is currently a professor of Education and Law at the University of Texas, Austin, TX. This unusual joint appointment brings her experience as Assistant Secretary of Education and her fourteen years as regional counsel and education director of the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund to the university classroom. While serving as Assistant Secretary of Education she oversaw a staff of approximately 850 and was responsible for implementing governmental policy for civil rights in American education.
