IRVING, Texas June 21, 2004—
North Lake College is sponsoring its first Upward
Bound program this summer. The program is designed
to help ninth to eleventh grade students at Irving
and Nimitz High Schools succeed in higher education.
The mission of the federally funded Upward Bound
Program is to assist students in completing high school
and doing well with the transition to college. Upward
Bound includes instructional and support services
in the basic skills of reading, writing, science and
mathematics. Components are an intensive, six-week
academic summer session at the college and support
services at the student’s high school during
the academic year.
The North Lake program director, Guy Melton, describes
Upward Bound as another tool for the college to use
in “helping students be successful.” Participants
will be selected according to their potential for
academic success. “We want to encourage those
students with the motivation and skills to pursue a college career,” Guy explains.
Guy served as Assistant Director of Financial Aid
at North Lake and the Financial Aid Director for El
Centro College from 1996-97.
The summer session will be held at the North Lake
College campus from June 12 to July 21. Students will
experience college life by taking classes, attending
workshops, and participating in academic counseling
and various social and cultural events. Some of the
seminars and workshops will focus on time management,
study skills, test anxiety, career exploration and
a self-interest inventory to match individual preferences
with possible career directions.
The academic year program component provides after
school tutoring and counseling at the student’s
high school campus. An individual needs assessments
will be performed to tailor instruction and counseling
for each student.
The North Lake program is limited to 50 students
who meet the federally mandated qualifications. Some
of the qualifications are financial need and the motivation
to acquire a four-year degree. Also, students must
be from families whose parents have not received four-year
college degrees. There is no cost to participate.
Enrollment has begun for the summer session. Interested
parties should contact Charlotte Brown at North Lake
College at (972) 273-3389.
All Upward Bound services are funded by the U.S.
Department of Education. Educational opportunities
are offered by the Dallas County Community College
District without regard to race, color, age, national
origin, religion, gender or disability.
