Free Jazz Concert at North Lake College

IRVING, Texas. Jan. 18, 2007 — North Lake College presents a free Jazz Concert with well-known Dallas area performers. The North Lake Evening Jazz Ensemble, led by Danny Prado, will be joined by Ira Bassett on trumpet and Claudia Melton as vocalist. The performance will be held on Thursday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 PM in the college’s Performance Hall. The band will perform contemporary big-band music and present tributes to jazz legends, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday.

Mr. Ira Bassett has performed with a long list of musical greats including Ray Charles, B. B. King, Lionel Hampton, Fathead Newman, and Cab Calloway. He recently served as arranger and performer on Kirk Franklin's album, "New Nation," and recorded with jazz artist Waymon Tisdale. Audiences will also recognize Bassett as a regular musical performer in Dallas Theater Center productions such as "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Guys and Dolls".  As music director for the Dallas Black Academy of Arts and Letters, Mr. Bassett has conducted concerts at the Morton Meyerson Concert Hall, and has also served as contractor/performer for the fledgling Dallas Cowboys "America's Band."  

Featured vocalist Claudia Melton grew up in a musical family in Corpus Christi, Texas beginning violin lessons at the early age of four, piano at eight, alto saxophone at eleven, and has played the vibraphone since age thirteen.  While still in high school she began performing professional "gigs" with her older brother a bassist and band director. Ms. Melton attended Texas Christian University where she directed the award-winning TCU "Word of Truth" Gospel Choir and performed as soloist with the Jazz Band. She completed her education at the University of North Texas where she was featured soloist with the world-famous UNT Jazz Singers, and lead vocalist for the UNT Keyboard Ensemble the "Zebras". 

After graduation Ms. Melton toured the nation with the Kennedy Center "Imagination Celebration Tour" and was lead musician for the show "Harlem". Melton now performs with the Dallas based band "Top", a group named "Best Dance Band" by D Magazine.  Among her major musical influences, she names Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Jill Scott, Roberta Flack, Natalie Cole, as well as her musical family members.
