IRVING, Texas — On Wednesday, January 30,
2008, North Lake College will “awaken” the
ground for their new North Lake College South campus.
The ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. on the
property, located at 1081 W. Shady Grove Road (northeast
corner of MacArthur and Shady Grove).
The college’s president, Herlinda M. Glasscock,
said about the awakening event: “We are using
the term “awakening” to acknowledge
our efforts to help build a sustainable community
with the addition of our new campus. We will awaken
the land to serve our students and community.” The
North Lake South campus is being built with an
overarching sustainability policy of using industry
energy savings and use of “green” building
practices when possible.
The building is part of a $450 million dollar
bond package that Dallas County voters approved
in May, 2004, to expand the Dallas County Community
College District (DCCCD). As part of this
expansion, North Lake is building two new campuses
to serve students in the north and south
sectors of northwest Dallas County, plus adding
new buildings and additions at the main campus
at 5001 N. MacArthur, Iriving Texas.
The new North Lake College South
campus will be a 30,000 sq. ft. facility designed
to provide the community with a center for educational
attainment that meets the economic and workforce
needs of Irving and the surrounding area. Academic
offerings at the South Campus will include
academic transfer courses; personal enrichment
and career courses; the college’s GED Testing
Center; special entrepreneurship education workshops
and courses; and the Teacher Academy.
North Lake College South will have comprehensive
student support services that will include English/Spanish
academic and career advising; registration; payment;
and financial aid services. Students will have
access to library holdings and computers. Vending
machines will provide refreshments in the food
court and a Community Room will be open to members
of the community and civic organizations to meet.
As part of the City of Irving’s gateway
and corridor program to enhance Irving’s
visual image and identity, the MacArthur/Shady
Grove gateway will be built on the corner of the
South Campus property. The beautification project
will include sculpture, a public seating area,
landscaping and architectural elements. The gateway
will be completed in 2009.
