North Lake College Wins National RecycleMania for Third Time

IRVING – North Lake College has a lot to celebrate this Earth Day. For the third consecutive year, the college has won the Waste Minimization category of the national RecycleMania competition.

We are thrilled to be recognized for our sustainable efforts for the third year in a row,” said Dr. Herlinda Glasscock, North Lake College president. “RecycleMania challenges our students and employees to rethink their consumption and the waste that it generates. The recognition affirms our efforts to develop more sustainable practices. North Lake is proud to support this incredible event knowing that we are creating awareness for the importance of balancing social, economic, and environmental priorities.”

From January 17 to March 27, this 10-week challenge ignites classic college rivalries, rallying students, faculty and staff to increase on-campus recycling rates beyond their collegiate competitors. RecycleMania wrapped up its 10th annual recycling competition in late March, with over 84.5 million pounds of recyclables and organics recovered from 607 colleges and universities across the country.

The Waste Minimization category focuses on overall waste reduction instead of just recycling. Schools compete to see who can generate the lowest amount of total waste per capita. North Lake averaged 0.77 cumulative pounds per person each week.

“The students, faculty and staff at North Lake have put forth such an amazing effort to cut down on waste during the competition. But what’s more important is that we continue to work hard to recycle and reduce waste throughout the year,” said Steve Schellenberg, Assistant Director of Facilities Services at North Lake College and coordinator for the RecycleMania effort. “It is a huge honor for us to finish first for a third year. Since we are competing with such an incredible variety of schools from across the country, it is a thrill to receive this recognition.”

RecycleMania was launched in 2001 as a friendly challenge between Ohio University and Miami University to increase recycling on their campuses. RecycleMania is administered by the National Recycling Coalition (NRC), as a project of NRC’s College and University Recycling Council (CURC). RecycleMania is championed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WasteWise program and The Coca-Cola Company. For complete contest background and details, visit the RecycleMania Web site at
