On November 2, 2011, NCCER's Build Your Future (BYF) campaign teamed
up with the Construction Education Foundation of North Texas, North Lake College
and TEXO to hold a Construction Career Day event highlighting National Careers
in Construction Week. This inaugural event brought over 900 people together all
focused on narrowing the skills gap of America's youth by bringing the
construction industry and education together.
Over 500 students from school Regions 10 and 11 in North Texas had the
opportunity to use crane and equipment simulators, view welding demonstrations
and meet with perspective employers.
"The event had just the right mix of excitement, information and activity to
engage the students and prompt them to consider their opportunities in the
construction industry. The students were very enthusiastic and engaged the
various contractors with questions as the contractors demonstrated various
aspects of their businesses. The students left with a much better understanding
of the sophistication and planning that's required in building construction
today and learned how they might enter and develop their own careers in the
construction industry," said Mark Nyquist, Chairman and CEO of DynaTen
Students also had the opportunity to speak with and get autographs from David
Starr, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver #81.
