North Lake College Mourns Student Loss
Star Student Is Missed By All
IRVING, Texas- A Memorial service for North Lake College student Nkonyezi Nanyamka was held Tuesday, April 10, at 1 p.m. at Unity of Dallas Church.
Nanyamka, known affectionately as "Neeko," was born in Kenya and made a name for herself on North Lake's campus. She was the former president of North Lake’s International Club, Blazer Ambassadors, and Photography Club as well as a member of the Student Leadership Institute and Phi Theta Kappa. Classmate Jean Louis fondly remembers his friend.
“The memorial service was colorful and represented her,” began Louis. “She believed all religions were different ways of reaching to the same God. The memorial service represented that- Hinduism, Christianity and Islam. She had a very strong determination, she basically embodied student service.”
Photography was a big part of Nanyamka’s life. In 2010, she was the winner of the Gordon Parks Young Photographers Competition and two of her photos were chosen for the fall 2010 Duck Soup magazine. Off campus she ran her own photography business, capturing images of two of her favorite subjects: people and nature. Nanyamka hoped to use photography as a means of healing for women and children affected by genocide and was planning to double major in International Studies and Psychology to aid her in the structure of that program.
Nikonyezi Nanyamka passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2012, in a Dallas hospital. The North Lake College community offers her family and friends their sincerest condolences during this sad time. She will be missed by teachers, classmates and friends alike.
“Nkonyezi Nanyamka is a star and an angel,” explains Phi Theta Kappa President Joeng Lee. “She was energetic, bright, and selfless, always devoted to serving her community. She cared for every individual she met and gave them a part of her…her spirit will always dwell among us and motivate us to spread her love to the society.”
NLC Accounting Services is accepting contributions for medical and funeral expenses.
