Hawaii Field Studies Program Showcases Student Photography

Gallery exhibit offers viewers a virtual vacation
IRVING – The North Lake College Hawaiian Field Studies (HFS) Photography Exhibition is currently on display in the Central Campus Gallery through August 8, 2013. Comprised of 60 digital images by approximately 30 North Lake students, the show features work from the 2013 HFS trip to islands of Oahu, Kauai and Hawaii. An artist reception will be held Thursday, July 18, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.
“This program changed my life,” says former student Terry Bates. “The courses were interesting, the scenery was beautiful, and I made lifelong friends.” The first community college student to receive the Collegiate Fellow’s Emmett J. Conrad, MD award, Bates is continuing his quest for a career in healthcare at the University of Denver.
Offering college credit in everything from botany to biology, the Hawaiian Field Studies program previously catered to science and pre-health students. New classes like digital photography and physical fitness, however, have allowed for student collaboration across multiple disciplines.
“Experiences like this always open your mind,” says student Sean Toner, who signed up for the HFS trip to combine his two passions: photography and meteorology. “You can’t have a balanced look at life if you’re only looking at ‘art’ or only looking at ‘science.’ You gain a better understanding and appreciation for how things work when you look at the world from multiple angles.”
Images from the 2013 HFS trip were shot with digital SLR cameras, provided by the North Lake College Photography Department. Many of these photographs are available for purchase—in a display or book format. To order, contact instructor Kate Jenkins at (972) 273-3567.
