Math and Science Open House at North Lake College

Event Targets Both Current & Future Students

With spring classes beginning January 22, North Lake College (NLC) will host a Math and Science Open House January 16 – 18 in the Central Campus’ C-building atrium. While Spring Registration closes January 16 at 11:59 p.m., students who are registered for at least one course will be able to add and drop classes on Thursday and Friday.
NLC’s upcoming open house is for both current and future students in science and mathematics courses. A variety of educational workshops will offer students a strong foundation for the semester, including how to use a graphing calculator and create study flashcards, while panel discussions will examine the pros and cons of lecture, online, and hybrid courses. Faculty and advisors will be on hand, ready to help attendees determine the best courses for their education and career goals. The open house will also present a special look at the college’s growing pre-professional organizations and popular ‘fast-track’ courses.
“The faster pace more adequately prepared me for the upper divisions of pre-med,” says Matthew Dempsey of the NLC ‘fast-track’ classes. “It was sort of a litmus [test] for my future.” A former NLC student himself, Dempsey now teaches biology at the college and leads the summer Study Abroad program in Hawaii. For the open house, he suggests visitors tour the NLC Science and Math Learning Centers, where free tutoring, solution manuals and full sets of anatomy models provide extra student support.
“The Science Learning Center (SLC) helped me tremendously,” says student Claudia Voicu. “I was so lost…when I started General Chemistry. Being there helped me a lot.” Now a tutor herself, Voicu remains impressed by the operation. “You simply raise your hand and a tutor will come to you,” she adds, “You never have to wait.”
