Spring Commencement To Be Held at Irving Convention Center
IRVING, Texas- North Lake College (NLC) will hold its 35th commencement Saturday, May 11, at the Irving Convention Center. The 10 a.m. ceremony will feature guest speaker Dr. Darryl E. Howard and Dallas County Community College District [DCCCD] Board Trustee JL “Sonny” Williams.
A professor of religion and education at North Lake College, Dr. Howard hopes to remind students what true success is through reflections about their past, present and future. “Being successful requires that we stop treating education as if it is an interruption to our lives, and start embracing education as a necessity for our lives,” explains Dr. Howard. “If you expect to experience success in life…doing your best is not enough, but you must also do what is required." Dr. Howard is the recipient of the North Lake College 2012-2013 President's Scholar Award and 2012 DCCCD Visions of Excellence Focus on Excellence in Teaching Award.
Joining Dr. Howard on stage will be student speaker Diana Noko of North Lake’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Secretary of the Student Government Association and the Student Veterans Association, Noko will be attending the University of Texas at Arlington on full scholarship this fall, majoring in Electrical Engineering. “My experience [at North Lake] has been an absolute adventure,” said Noko, who moved to the U.S. from Zimbabwe three years ago. “There are so many students from different countries coming here and they all have such great compassion to help one another succeed. It’s really awesome to see.” Noko hopes to one day work for NASA or the U.S. Navy.
The Irving Convention Center will offer family and friends seating on a first come, first serve basis. No tickets are required and free parking will available in the garage. Attendees riding on the DART Orange Line should exit at the Irving Convention Center Station. The Irving Convention Center is located at 500 W Las Colinas Boulevard, Irving, TX 75039.
