Annual Showcase Now Open to The Public
IRVING, Texas- The 14th annual North Lake College [NLC] Video Showcase will take place Wednesday, May 15 at the Texas Theatre from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Hosted by the college’s department of Video Technology, the evening will feature films by current students and former alumni, including Jeremy Williams’ award-winning short “Spirits.”
An eco-friendly film, “Spirits
” surrounds a wandering phantom, Static, who forces a small town to go without electricity for one day. With no distractions, candles are lit, stories are told, and a community grows closer. “Spirits” recently won the Community Choice Award in TXU Energy’s “Light Up the Red Carpet”
student film contest.
“There is a game that my friends and I sometimes play when eating at a restaurant,” says Williams, explaining the inspiration for his concept. “We stack our cell phones at the cent
er of the table and we can't touch them until we leave—forcing us to have actual conversation. I thought…what if an entire town had to do this, or an entire restaurant.” Williams follows in the footsteps of former classmate Dillon White
, TXU Energy’s 2012 Grand Prize Winner. Now graduated, White is an assistant editor at MPS Studios.
“Students have something to show for their time here,” explains Andy Chiles, head of the Video Technology program at North Lake College. “They get their hands on equipment early on. At some schools you have to wait until junior or senior year. Not here. The point of our program is to give them skills so they can go to work.” NLC Video Technology students have also competed in and won Dallas’ 24-hour Video Race, Hollywood’s College Academy Awards and Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, to name a few.
