Students Minimize Waste on Campus
IRVING, Texas- As the spring semester
kicks into full gear, North Lake College (NLC) is looking to reclaim its national title in the Waste Minimization division of RecycleMania
, a friendly recycling competition that started in 2001 between the Ohio University and Miami University. From 2008 to 2011, the RecycleMania trophy, fondly named “PinMan,” was a permanent fixture on campus, and with this year’s competition taking shape, the college has one goal in mind: to bring back PinMan.
Over an 8-week period
from February 2 to March 29, participating schools compete in various categories measuring the success of their recycling and waste reduction efforts. A total of 461 colleges
and universities from across the United States and Canada are participating this year, including Valencia College, North Lake College’s rival and the 2013 winner of the beloved PinMan. The NLC marketing department has created a multi-media campaign around the PinMan, including an animated YouTube video series
highlighting his journeys.
“PinMan is much more than a just a trophy to the North Lake community. He’s a symbol of a commitment to sustainability,” explains Gina Federer, Director of Marketing & Public Information at North Lake College. “Participating in the RecycleMania competition allows us to measure our accomplishments against our peers. Winning would be wonderful, but right now we’re mainly focused on raising awareness.”
In addition to The Pin Man video series, the NLC marketing campaign to “Bring Back PinMan” extends to social media contests, print posters, pep rallies and other campus events all aimed at keeping students in the “green” mindset. All tips for sustainable living are paired with the hashtag #bringbackpinman.
“Winning consecutive years placed North Lake College in the elite company of only a few colleges that have attained that distinction,” says Steve Schellenberg, Assistant Director of Facilities Services and Coordinator of RecycleMania. “We hope to reclaim our national title and maintain it in the years to come.”
North Lake’s participation in RecycleMania is part of a broader strategy to raise environmental awareness and encourage sustainable practices across the campus. In 2007, former North Lake President Dr. Herlinda Glasscock signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, a high-visibility effort to address global warming. Over the last several years, the college has continued to put initiatives in place to support this commitment.
Schools participating in the RecycleMania tournament are required to report measurements on a weekly basis. Weekly standings are posted on the RecycleMania website
. The 2014 competition results will be announced April 11.
