A-400 doubles in size; move-in on schedule

After four months of demolition and almost six months of remodeling and construction, A-400 has a tentative completion scheduled for November.

“We are looking for substantial completion by Nov.15,” construction manager Bill Bradford said. “Then, a punch list will be done of all the things that need to be adjusted and fixed. The contractor has 30 days to complete and fix this punch list.”

The project, which started in February, moved Student Services across the street to the Holman building on Walnut Hill.

As a result, the completion of the project will enable students to obtain their services on campus during the spring 2003 semester.
“Right now we are targeting Jan.21,” facilities director John Watson said. “This date would work out nicely because registration will have calmed down, all the construction will be done, and people could just unpack easily.”

During the construction and remodeling, A-400 was divided into A-400 east (the new side) and A-400 west (the old side), Bradford said.

“We’re right on schedule,” he said. “In the A-400 west lobby area, the floor is being prepared, the carpet and doors installed, and they are finishing the final paint. I mean, it’s wrapping up. Then, from the west, they are following up to finish the east.”

Bradford gives the co-operation by the college and the district credit for the project’s advance in its schedule. Originally, the contract was extended another 13 weeks, which would go into Jan. 10. But, he said, they worked smart and hired more people.

“If you have a plan, and then you work out your plan, everything goes right,” he said. “There have been no safety issues, lost time or injuries up there with the workers or the students.”

The A-400 project has added 20,000 sq. ft. to the building and has remodeled 18,000 sq.ft. of pre-existing space. Needless to say, the space of A-400 has doubled in size.

“We’ll be finishing the punch list by mid-December,” Watson said. “Right now, we are determining furniture needs and doing the ordering. It will probably arrive for installation early in the new year and once the furniture is placed, the project will be complete.”
