Adaptive Physical Fitness first of its kind at North
Lake College
By Bobbie Krumm
Staff Writer
There’s a new class in the
weight room this semester – adaptive physical
fitness. Students in this class give their muscles and
self-esteem a good workout.
Technically, this is a physical education course for
the physically and mentally challenged. Instructed by
Athletics Director Dan Joutras, the classes meet Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Currently,
there are seven students enrolled in the class.
Joutras first finds out the student’s disabilities
and then starts a strengthening program to fit his or
her needs. The programs also teaches students reponsibility,
independence, nutrition and proper machine usage. The
students get one-on-one-attention from the instructor.
Joutras said that it is challenging to work with students
with physical disabilities, but he gets pleasure from
helping them suceed. They do get nervous, but as they
improve, they start to feel better about themselves.
This helps give the students positive reinforcement.
This is the first semester for this class. Carole
Gray, Director of Disability Services, has helped form
the class for the fall and spring semester. It is a
scheduled class, and if any students are interested
in joining, they need to see the Registration Office.
Or call Joutras at 972-273-3518.
