First basketball home game schedule November 14

By Tim McGraw
Contributing Writer

The basketball Blazers have
played five scrimmage games
in preparation for the season which officially opens Oct. 31.

That’s when our men’s team will play in the Thunderbird Classic Shoot-Out in Hobbs, New Mexico. Our competition includes New Mexico Junior College, New Mexico Military Institute and Cochise College of Arizona.

The next week we’ll travel to Oklahoma City to play Rose State College and Murray State College. Mark your calendars for our home opener – Nov. 14 against Texas Wesleyan University’s J.V. squad with a 7 p.m. tip-off time.

Returning players Ryan Prior, Shane King and Jared Lappa will lead the Blazers with hopes of leading the North Lake College squad to the National Tournament in Delhi New York, where our 1999-2000 team finished fourth in the nation in NJCAA Division III.

The biggest challenge to becoming the national champion is qualifying for the tournament by winning our Metro Conference Tournament Feb. 26-29, 2003.

Last season, our guys lost to Richland College by one point, and Richland went on to the national tournament where they won two games and finished in third place in the nation.

Our league is extremely talented and well coached. Over the last six seasons, our league has a 14-4 record at our national tournament, and we’ve (Metro Conference Champions) won three national tournaments.

I believe we consistently have four of the top ten teams in the nation in our conference. The pre-season poll bears that out. Richland, Cedar Valley, Brookhaven and North Lake received votes in the pre-season national poll.

On a lighter side, on Sunday, Oct. 20, we hosted the Fellowship of Christian Athletes North Texas “Wacky Games” Championships. It was hilarious. Our squad, made up of Ruth Franco, Beau Fredrichsen, Billy Hohensee, Josh Wittgren and Ryan Pryor, won the championship.
