Exchange students loved Texas hospitality

From the State Fair Midway to Galveston's beach,
the Lone Star State welcomed Germans
After a busy three weeks in America, nine German exchange
students departed DFW International Airport on Oct.
19 with a handful of new experiences.
During their stay, Patricia Corbett, secretary to
NLC’s president and the person responsible for
the program, kept the guests busy with sightseeing trips.
The variety of attractions was enormous, but out of
everything they had seen or done, they all agree that
their trip to Galveston was the best.
“We had the beach, sun, nice hotel, everything
you could ask for,” said Melanie Schiffe.
They also enjoyed sightseeing in downtown Dallas and
seeing the Texas Star ferris wheel at the State Fair
of Texas.
The nine exchange students and their two teachers
are from Uelzen, Germany, and arrived in the U.S. on
Sept. 28.
Each night after their planned activities, the German
students and their two teachers spent the evenings with
their host families.
“They are just great,” said Bea Grau.
They all agreed that the program and activities are
one thing, but the hosts are just as important. Some
of them even claimed that it was the “biggest
part” of the American experience.
“We went bowling and shopping and it was just
so nice,” said Schiffe.
When asked if there was something about Texas that
would make them want to stay here, they surprisingly
didn’t mention the weather (they thought it was
too hot).
“The atmosphere and the people who are extremely
friendly, helpful and always asking where we are from,”
was the general consensus of the group.
