First-ever Date Auction big hit all proceeds go to scholarships

Students were literally climbing the walls to get a better view of the Date Auction, which was held on Thursday, Oct. 10, 12:30 p.m., in the cafeteria.

Before the event even started, Deejay Joe Joe from Chicago was spinning his records and had the crowd bobbing their heads and tapping their feet.

It was an amazing sight to see the cafeteria full of excited and anxious students. The event was organized by the International club to raise scholarship funds for international students by auctioning off students as dates.

In order to help the college students with the date expenses, the club provided gift certificates to restaurants. Among the many restaurants were the Four Seasons Resort & Club, b.d.'s Mongolian Barbecue, Red, Hot, & Blue, i Fratelli, Pei Wei, Bahama Breeze, El Chico, and Stratos.

At one side of the cafeteria, a long line of students eagerly awaited to be escorted on stage. International club member, Keo Ahmed, introduced the potential dates with his Scottish accent, and at the same time, he entertained the audience.

Bids started off at $5, but for some, it did not stay at that price for long. The audience was roaring when two guys raised their bids on Laurice Len Abanilla and practically toppled over their seats when she was sold for $122 to Sak Makosy. The couple received a brunch for two at the Four Seasons restaurant.
The dates were not shy to sell themselves when they were the center of attention, but it was all in fun. Once on stage, students did everything from taking off their shirts and doing back flips, to shaking their gluteus. At one point, everybody was laughing, hooting or hollering at the spectacle.

Virginia Jones, director of Student Programs and Resources said, "This is by far the best fundraising event that North Lake has ever had."

With the help of faculty and staff and most importantly, the students, the club raised an amazing amount of $500. The International Club will host another Date Auction in the spring. For more information about the International Club or other clubs on campus, visit the SPAR office in A-223.
