TRIO hosting workshops
The following three study skill workshops will be conducted by TRIO and are open to all North Lake College students:
Jan. 29 - “Note Taking and Essay Writing”
Feb. 4 - “Procrastination”
Feb. 13 - “Reading Skills”
All three workshops will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., in T-257. Certificates of attendance will be handed out for instructors willing to give extra credit. Light refreshments will be served.

Forensics team heads to competition
The NLC Forensics Team will travel to North Harris College in Houston Jan. 31 through Feb. 2 for the Spring Texas Intercollegiate Forensics Association 2003 Tournament.
Anyone interested in being a part of the forensics program this semester can contact Sonja Hopkins at 972-273-3564.
In other speech news, the Linda Jean Long Endowment Scholarship will be awarded to Teresa Box and Tjidzani Maphosa.

New club on campus
Because of the large and diverse Spanish speaking culture at NLC, a new club has been formed to exchange ideas and information.
Estamos Unidos, which means ‘we are united,’ will hold bi-monthly meetings, and membership is open to anyone studying or working at NLC who is interested in the Spanish language.

Student art accepted in show

Art by two NLC students was accepted into 2SHOW, a community college competitive exhibition for Visual Communications, Computer Graphics, Illustration and Communication Design.
Out of 197 entries, 28 were chosen to be in the 2SHOW exhibition, which was on display last month at Brookhaven College. Selected were Pablo Wilder for a CD cover entitled “Spaghetti Western,” and Haibei Ren for a CD cover entitled “Light.”

Art contest open to NLC students
Irving students are invited to take part in the city’s Centennial Celebration by submitting original artwork in an art contest. Cash prizes will be awarded in many categories, and entries will be displayed at the Irving Arts Center from March 8-30.
The contest is open to all schools, colleges and students in Irving. Entries should portray an historic event or place in Irving, or a contemporary scene.
Entries must be submitted between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the Carpenter Performance Hall. Entry forms and contest guidelines are available online at www.ci.irving.tx.us/100Years/artexhibit.htm.

Professor earns doctorate degree
Dr. Olivia Villagra, English as a Second Language faculty, earned her Doctor of Education degree in December 2002 with a major in Supervision, Curriculum, and Instruction-Higher Education from Texas A&M University, Commerce.

Senior book discussions planned

The Senior Book Discussion Group will meet from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., on the following dates: Feb. 18, March 18, April 22 and May 20.
All meetings are held at the North Lake Community Library. February’s book is “City of Bones” by Michael Connelly. March’s book is “Jackdaws” by Ken Follett.

Mary Snyder from Texas Woman’s University will present a program entitled “My Heart Hurts: Dealing with the Loss of a Loved One,” at 2 p.m., Feb. 1, in the Library Instruction Room.
Kalinka Duo, Russian Folk Music will perform Feb. 10 at 7 p.m., in the Children’s Program Room.

Graduates need to file now
Students who intend to complete the requirements for their associate degree or certificate in the Spring 2003, Summer I 2003 or Summer II 2003 need to go by the Admissions Office, A-405, and file for their diploma/certificate.
Deadline to file is no later than April 1, 2003. Date of commencement is May 8, 2003, and family and friends are encouraged to attend the graduation event.

Africa University needs donations
Dr. Phyllis Elmore, a professor of English at North Lake College, brought the need of Africa University to the attention of the SPAR office.
The university is an international college located in the city of Mutare in the east of Zimbabwe.
Basic toiletries such as soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, lotion and other such products are needed by the students in Africa. SPAR is accepting the donations in A-233. The deadline is March 1, 2003.
