Portfolio awards
given to
10 artists
Special to the News-Register
Each year at the end of the fall semester,
NLC art students are given the opportunity to submit a
portfolio of his/her work to the art department for judging.
Each portfolio contains five to eight pieces of art that
represent the student’s best work.
Before the start of the spring semester, faculty members
from the art department jury the portfolios for awards
and competitions. North Lake College faculty reviewed
24 portfolios, giving ratings and comments that are shared
with each student.
The faculty recently announced the following Student Art
Portfolio Awards for 2003:
Rebecca Garza, recipient of the 2002-2003 Cecil Wallace
Fordham Outstanding Art Student Award ($400). She will
be presented with the award at a DCCCD Foundation luncheon
in March along with recipients of the same award from
the other colleges in the DCCCD.
Gina Kern and Shabbir Degani each received the Art Portfolio
Excellence Award ($250 each.)
Haibei Ren and Soe Felicia Hansel were recipients of the
Art Portfolio Commendation Award ($200 each).
Maggie Maxwell, Courtney Beal, Clay Beutler, Jena Rushing
and Jeff Cornelius took the Art Portfolio WEOTA Award
honors ($150 each).
During the selection process for the Student Portfolio
Review, the following works were chosen for inclusion
in an exhibition at Mountain View College in February
for the League for Innovation:
“Foolhardy,” a sculpture using latex gloves,
pipes and wood, by Rebecca Garza, Gina Kern’s painting,
“Containment,” Shabbir Degani’s sculpture
“Persistence of Memory,” a charcoal drawing
by Jorge Figueroa entitled “Skulls,” a clay
and paint sculpture by Haibei Ren entitled “Looking
Glass,” a clay and paint sculpture by Ibrahim Abusaad
entitled “Contained,” Maggie Maxwell’s
painting “Misery,” and Kym Munson’s
painting “Unveiled.”
First runner-up for the League for Innovation was a painting
by Jeff Cornelius. Second runner-up was a sculpture by
Clay Beutler entitled “Cause and Effect,”
which was made from cigarettes and matches.
From this exhibit, a professional juror will select five
pieces that will represent the DCCCD in the 2003 National
League for Innovation Student Art catalog.
