First annual Santa Bucks program reaches 200

It was a concept that had never been done before on campus: collect donated food and clothing, and then give it away free to NLC students.

On Dec. 4, 2002, about 200 students lined up to receive their $25 in play money (Santa Bucks) to go shopping. Some spent it all on food; others purchased clothing for Christmas gifts.

The project was sponsored by the Journalism Club and was open to every student at North Lake College. The only requirement was that the student show an I.D.

About 600 pounds of food and boxes and boxes of gently worn clothing were donated by faculty and staff members to the program.

Lisa ‘Lolly’ Arden, an instructional associate in the journalism lab, and Emily Knowles, a student writer for the News-Register, worked long hours sorting and stacking all the items for the first annual Santa Bucks program

Because of the program’s success, it will return in December.
