SACS accreditation is key to quality at NLC
Special to the News-Register
The Self-Study is being completed. Edits and rewrites
are in progress. Hundreds of pounds of documents are being
assembled and catalogued. The Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools will be making their once-in-a-decade
inspection visit March 16-19.
Have you ever wondered why the courses you take here at
NLC transfer to other colleges? Have you ever used a student
service that is funded by a federal grant? Financial aid?
Tutoring? Without SACS approval of the college, none of
this would be possible.
SACS approval, or accreditation, is the key to maintaining
a recognized quality standard at North Lake, a quality
standard that allows the college to get federal and state
funds, and students to transfer courses.
The accreditation process must be repeated every 10 years.
Even now the college is completing a two-and-one-half-year
study to make certain that NLC complies with every SACS
requirement.
When the Visiting Committee arrives in March, it can –
and will – look at every aspect of the college from
financial stability to faculty. You may even see committee
members in your classes or in the cafeteria visiting with
students. Be ready to help by giving directions or answering
questions.
For more information, contact Jim White, Self-Study director,
in the old library, or call him at 972-273-3466.
