Toni Shankle
North Lake College student Toni Shankle passed away
Sept. 30, 2002.
While attending college last fall the 24-year-old, single
mother, who lived in Irving, worked full-time to support
herself and her two-year-old son.
“Toni was vivacious, compassionate, witty and
intelligent,” said her speech teacher, Dr. Linda
Long. “She set high goals for herself and was
working hard to achieve them for herself and her young
son by working full-time and attending school.”
Shankle’s family lives in Jasper, Texas, where
she attended Jasper High School. Before enrolling at
North Lake College, she attended Tyler Junior College
and Sam Houston University. Her major was respiratory
therapy.
At NLC, Shankle was enrolled in Speech 1311.7014 to
“learn to speak effectively to a crowd,”
according to her teacher. She made many friends during
her short time at NLC.
“She was very friendly and well-liked by her classmates,”
said Long.
“I know they would join me in saying, ‘We
miss you, Toni, and will never forget you.”
