Annual chili cookoff scheduled for March 3
By Anna Urbanik
Staff Writer
This year’s Chili Cookoff competition will be
held March 3 at noon in front of the cafeteria, where
brave chili makers will meet to present the best ever
bowl of Texas Red.
Contestants will compete for unbelievable prizes that
include tickets to the Las Colinas Symphony, overnight
stays at Courtyard Marriott and Marriott Residence Inn,
four tickets to “Disney on Ice,” and gift
certificates to bd’s Mongolian barbecue.
There’s good news for students, faculty and staff
--you can all be a part of the Third Annual Journalism
Club Chili Cookoff and enter your own pot of meat, grease
and fire. You can prepare everything at home and bring
it in a crockpot on the day of competition. Spoons,
cups, napkins, tables and electricity will be provided.
The entrance deadline is Feb. 28. Pepito, NLC’s
god of chili, returns to reign over the event.
Kathleen Stockmier, Journalism Club sponsor, has decreed
an “anything goes” policy for the Devil
Soup production. So feel free to use your special secret
recipe spiced up with imagination and passion. Then,
let the judges experience the red delight and select
the masterpiece.
The judging is blind and jury members cannot be employed
by DCCCD. The Journalism Club has invited chili experts
from outside the college to judge the event.
Besides the grand prize for the best chili there’s
also a chance to be awarded in other categories, such
as best-decorated table, best presentation and most
spirited cook (the one who seems to have the most fun).
Everyone is invited to join the chili adventure and
dig in. There’s also a People’s Choice Award
which gives the participants an opportunity to vote
for their favorite team.
To enter, call the News-Register at 972-273-3498
or e-mail Stockmier at kls7420@dcccd.edu
