Who’s on first?
By Matt Smith

Coaching experience: 18-year career; 13 years at North
Lake College.
Playing experience: Played through high school and one
year at Richland Junior College, Richland, Texas.
Marital status: Single
Favorite NLC baseball memory: Spring 1992 when NLC clinched
first World Series berth under his coaching. Down three
games, North Lake won three in a row to advance.
How do you motivate players? It depends on the person;
every player is
different. When you’re around your players, you
use different motivations than when you are around everybody
else. Certain guys can take certain things and other
guys can’t.
What is your position on Major League
Baseball player strikes?
They get paid pretty well and sometimes they
squabble over issues but unless you know all
the issues involved, it’s pretty hard to take
a stand either way. I can see the player’s side,
but I can see the owner’s side too; a lot of it
is the owner’s fault anyway.
What’s your favorite Major League
Team?
The older Oakland A’s teams. I’ve always
kind of supported them a bit.
Who’s your favorite Major League
Player?
Lou Gehrig. Even though I’ve never seen
him play, everything I ever saw about him
has made him one of my favorite players, not
to mention everything he accomplished.
What do you do on the weekends?
Baseball. There are no weekends from
January through May, then summer league
starts followed by fall ball. Baseball consumes all
my time.
