Arkansas native puts skating first in move to Metroplex

Jay Lilly, a first-year North Lake student, placed seventh in the Southwestern Regional Figure Skating Championships the week of Oct. 19 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Lilly, a native of Lonoke, Ark., competed in the Novice Dance division with partner Stephanie Segien. Lilly, who began skating at the age of three, is experienced in all fields of skating.

Before competing in ice dance, he competed for many years in the freestyle division.

“I like ice dancing because it is something different for me,” he said.

Ice dance is typically noted for extreme artistry and edge quality, whereas freestyle focuses more on the technical aspect of figure skating. Due to limited training conditions in Little Rock, Lilly made the move to Dallas this past summer.

Lilly is currently enrolled at North Lake full-time, and is enjoying it. Coming from a small town in Arkansas, the big-city life is exciting for him.

Lilly does not know what the future holds for him, but his current aspiration is to improve his skating with the advantages that the Dallas area has to offer to many young up-and-coming figure skaters.
