Giving cancer the
boot
By Jean Mills
Special to the News-Register
Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event
designed to celebrate cancer survivors and raise
money for research, education, advocacy, programs
and services. This program is the American Cancer
Society’s Annual signature event, which
provides opportunities for communities to learn
more about cancer while bringing all cancer survivors
together with their families and friends in the
search for a cure. It was held at NLC on May 7.
Angel Burke, Metro Area Manager of the American
Cancer Society, teamed together with North Lake
College’s Mosaic Alliance, PSSA, Phi Theta
Kappa, SGA, WEOTA, the Community Library, the
Police and Facilities Department, the famous Blazer
Bells, and Volunteer Event Coordinators were Dr.
Yolanda Romero, Dan Joutras and Jan Bodnar.
Students, faculty, staff, volunteers and hundreds
of other community participants walked all night
in the parking lot of the campus, stimulating
the true meaning of the event, “Cancer Never
Sleeps” in every step of the way. Thanks
to the help and support of everyone involved,
this year’s “Relay for Life”
raised close to $100,000 for the fight against
cancer. Stay tuned for details on next year’s
event.
(Jean Mills, NLC’s campus nurse, was
also an event coordinator for the ACS Relay.)
