Soccer has greatest
recruitment year yet
In the good old U.S.A., I heard that ‘spring
cleaning’ means to get rid of old stuff
and replace it with the new.
Since the Lady Soccer team’s win at Brookhaven
College last fall (3-0), we had to say good-bye
to a lot of our young players, either to graduation,
transfers, injuries, etc.
There are a few who received soccer scholarships
to four-year institutions and we congratulate
them, specifically Amir Horandar to Williams Baptist
in Arkansas, and Jessica Gibbons to Chicago, Ill.
We are also very fortunate to retain a few good
student athletes from last year who will be sophomores
who will help the newcomers ease into the 2004
soccer season.
Amanda Alverez, who could probably play at any
college, is back and will have a great impact
on the newcomers. She and Lili Buendia will co-captain
a young team that will have 15 to 18 newcomers!
New players include Darcey Green (goalkeeper)
from Arlington Lamar; Melissa Gonzalez, Irving
MacArthur; Celia Pina, Lisa Garcia, Monica Villages
and Jackie Nolasco from Irving High; Vilika Kervin
from Fort Worth East Hill High; Amy Siegler and
Jessica Wangler from Bishop Dunn; Maria Alfaro
and Ximena Ortiz from Mexico City High, and Ana
Veliz from Grand Prairie High.
This was our greatest recruiting yet and I am
looking forward to working with the girls. We
signed 11 to a letter of intent, but there are
other student athletes that we are considering
too.
Our pre-season practices start Sunday, Aug. 15,
at noon on NLC’s newly seeded and cut varsity
game field. I am very thankful to the grounds
crew who have done a great job preparing the field
where it is in almost 100 percent ‘game
condition.’
All players receive a summer training program
that will bring a better-prepared and fitter group
into pre-season than last year. This way most
of our work will be done with the ball to get
ready for the season.
We also have a fun soccer camp for girls and
boys ages 6-13 years old that has been going on
since June 14 and ends this Friday, July 2. Anyone
interested in playing call me at 972-273-3539.

and women’s soccer at North Lake College.)
