An Honorable Welcome

By Dawn Lassiter
Executive Vice President of the Alpha Zeta Eta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa

As I extend a warm welcome to you this new semester, I would especially welcome you, the freshman, to our wonderful campus. I encourage you to always try your best, to confront and overcome the challenges that will inevitably come your way, and to never stop believing in yourself. Do not compare yourself to any other on campus. You are a unique and beautiful individual, with your own talents and special characteristics that make you who you are. Learn as much about yourself as possible as you continue in your studies and particular discipline.

A world of opportunity awaits you and becomes more available as you attain each new level in your education. Your possibilities are endless and your individuality is what will contribute significantly to your success as a student on any campus and in the work force. Phi Theta Kappa is an example of an outstanding opportunity waiting for you as you look toward your future.

The Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society has recognized academic excellence in the two-year college since 1918. It has become the largest and most prestigious honor society with approximately 1.3 million members around the world. Our mission is “to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa provides opportunity for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.”

Frequently asked questions of Phi Theta Kappa are:

What criteria are used to determine membership?
It is based upon academic achievement. You must be enrolled in an accredited institution offering an associate degree program, have completed a minimum of 12 hours of coursework to an associate degree, and have a 3.5 grade point average.
Can a part-time student become a member?
Yes. Part-time members must also meet the eligibility standards listed above.
What is required to maintain membership?
After induction, members must maintain a GPA of 3.0 to remain in good standing.
How do you become a member of Phi Theta Kappa?
North Lake’s chapter, Alpha Zeta Eta, extends an invitation to students once per semester. Advertising of the next set of orientations and induction will be posted in the middle of the fall semester.
Is participation a requirement?
Participation in chapter activities is not a requirement. Phi Theta Kappa’s constitution requires only that a member make and maintain a certain GPA. No service activities may be required of members, nor may the chapter withhold basic benefits from a member in good standing. However, you will certainly want to consider the benefits of participating in the many programs available through Phi Theta Kappa membership.

Grayson Kirk, former President of Columbia University, said that “the most important function of education at any level is to develop the personality of the individual and the significance of his life to himself and to others. ” Phi Theta Kappa can help you in this endeavor as an important part of your education.
