Instructor surveys political opinions

Dr. Gabriel Bach, a North Lake College government professor, made a survey of his students about their opinions on the upcoming presidential elections the week before the Republican National Convention. He asked his students:

If you are a citizen, who would you vote for in November and why?
If you are a citizen and not registered to vote, who would you vote for in November and why?
If you are not a citizen, to whom would your presidential preference go to in November?

George W. Bush
Those planning to vote for President Bush said:

“Christian beliefs – opposition to homosexual unions, abortion, protection of religious beliefs.” Burl R. West Jr.

“I will vote for George Bush because I believe that the terrorist acts were not his fault, and I think he has handled the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan correctly.” Joe Bailon

“I am a registered voter and I am going to vote for George Bush. I may not agree with all of his policies, but I know where he stands. John Kerry flounders on issues.” Jennifer Gallegos

“Though I am not a U.S. citizen, I know I can’t vote in November but I personally support the President because he had a very strong plan for terrorism and financial situation of the country.” Bel B. Thopa

“No, I can’t vote because I am resident, but if I could vote, I would vote for George W. Bush because I think he is a good person, and the problem with him is that he took a very hard period. Also, I think Bush needs more time to accomplish his goals.” Maria Delgado

John Kerry
Those supporting Senator Kerry said:

“With the controversy over the political sides these days, I still am unsure of whom I am voting for. I am a Democrat and would think Kerry would be the obvious; however, with his issues at hand, I do disagree with some views. I will not be [voting for] Bush.” Rebecca Morris

“I am voting for Kerry because I would like to see changes in this country. I do not like Bush.” Hope Garcia

“I will vote but I have to do more research before doing so. I am not as up-to-date on political issues as I should be. However, I’m not too fond of Bush and his policy on war.” Amy Carlisle

“I do intend to vote this November. It seems like Kerry will be a better candidate, but I haven’t decided to vote for him. It seems like politicians will say anything to get elected. I know this. A change is definitely in order.” Mai-Ling Cox

“I will be voting for Kerry in the November elections for the possibility of opening up stem cell research for future generations. I lost my grandfather recently to Alzheimer’s and I am a firm believer in the power of science and medicine.” Matthew Thompson

Undecided
The undecided students said:

“I do not know anything about politics so I do not plan to vote. I do not want to vote for the wrong person.” Yeshica Juarez

“I am undecided on who I am going to vote for. They both have advantages and disadvantages.” Anna Mata

“I will not vote for either candidate. I was in the Army for three years and it was the President who had us spread out all over the world.” Anthony Blain

“I’m not sure. I’m undecided because I’m not very comfortable with either of the candidates. Neither side has convinced me enough to vote for them.” Erica Solis

“I am not sure who I will vote in office for president. I don’t know much about either of them and I would like to make the correct choice.” Roderick Fields
