Election results no surprise; voting awareness among top concerns of president

Dawn Lassiter was elected Student Government Association (SGA) president Sept. 17.

Other elected officers are Eka Tanzil, vice president; Grazie Brauser, secretary; Jesus Coronado, historian, and Tiffany Sims, parliamentarian.

Lassiter has many goals for this school year. One of her concerns is sports teams and the little support they have. Therefore, Lassiter would like to institute sports week. Her idea includes bringing the cheerleaders and coaches together for “open advertising where students are, in the cafeteria or in front of the bookstore.”

Another important concern, Lassiter said, is that the government is trying to cut back on Pell Grants. It is very important to prevent that, she said, because cutting back can prevent some students from being successful.

Promoting financial aid is imperative to all the students who are on grants, she said, and student government could be a voice for students on this matter.

Another area that Lassiter said the student government will work on is letting the students know about the Student Government Association. Most students, she said, don’t know about it or why it’s even there but most important of all how it can benefit them.

“I’d like to make students aware of student government voting and voting in general.”

Lassiter is the spring 2002 Amidon/Beauchamp scholarship recipient, student leader of the year of North Lake College, executive vice president of Phi Theta Kappa and student leadership facilitator.
