We're baaack!

Food, folks, fun, and music. What more could
a college student starting a new semester ask
for? Hmmm…how about a juggler? On Friday,
Sept. 17, North Lake College held its Welcome
Back Fall 2004 party for both returning students
and newcomers.
The event was sponsored by Student Programs and
Resources (SPAR). For the newcomers not familiar
with SPAR, I spoke with the Programs Specialist,
Drena! Settles (no, it is not a typo) as to the
organization ‘s purpose.
“To add a little flavor to education by
promoting student activities that are fun, entertaining,
and educational,” she enthusiastically said.
In addition to parties, S.P.A.R. also sponsors
speakers, educational events, and student organizations
such as Student Government Association (SGA) and
Student Leadership Initiative (SLI).
Food was catered, at no cost to attendees, by
Subway. The box meals were such a success it took
three tables to accommodate. Music was provided
by disc jockey Richard McClure of A Very Special
Day. Students jammed to a wide variety of artists
from 50 Cent to Hilary Duff to The BeeGees (still
Stayin’ Alive).
When asked what she liked best about North Lake
College, newcomer Alicia Montoya replied, “Teachers
and the environment. The teachers are nice.”
Asked the same question, returning student Leonardo
Josey quickly responded, “Girls.”
Twenty-five organizations set up tables. Students
received information from such organizations as
NLC Speech Club, Christians on Campus, and League
of United American Citizens (LULAC). Even 24-Hour
Fitness was on hand to enjoy the festivities and
provide incentives to North Lake College students.
A reminder: It is not too late visit the student
voting table, currently located just outside the
S.P.A.R. entrance.
The fun was not just confined to indoors in the
cafeteria area. Just outside the doors under the
awning, a trio of students engaged in a game of
hackeysack. Nearby, the intense dueling of a trading
card game played itself out. My thanks to Hunter
Fite and the Classless Society.
And did I mention there was a juggler? Jason
Christensen of JC Entertainment. In addition to
juggling, he made incredible “works of art”
out of balloons.
Personally speaking, I believe the party made
everyone, newcomers and returning students, feel
welcome.
