Amanda Turner is North Lake College’s new
cheerleading coach.
She has been working at North Lake for the last
two years as an academic advisor and a developmental
reading teacher.
Turner has never coached cheerleading before
but she has been around it for a long time. She
was a cheerleader in high school and her sisters
both participated in college.
“I really enjoy being around cheerleading,”
she said. “It’s a lot of fun.”
Sixteen girls tried out for cheerleading but
only 10 made the team. The ladies were scored
on jumping, tumbling and cheering. Those with
the most points made the team. The cheerleading
squad will be present at all home basketball games
this season, starting with the first game on Nov.
17.
Turner hopes the cheerleaders will attract more
crowds to the basketball games and pack the stands.
“I am very excited about this year,”
she said. “The girls have a lot of potential,
and they work very hard every Saturday at practice.”
This year’s squad includes Rachel Westen,
captain; Shanell Crawford, co-captain; Anna Valendez;
AJ Jones; Telea Martin; Gina Obasuyi; Camille
DuBose; Lacey Lanier; Claudia Marquez; Meah Baptiste;
and Carey Polk, mascot.
