Library hosts 'Latino
Reads'
By Josselyn Castellanos
Staff Writer
The North Lake Community Library will host Latino
Reads on Oct. 28 from noon to 1 p.m.
The event helps promote education by reading,
and was created two years ago to motivate Latinos
to read more and to acknowledge the work of Latino
writers.
Latino Reads benefits the Mi Escuelita preschools
and the Dallas/Ft Worth WB33 Kids Fund. Mi Escuelita
is an early childhood program that helps at-risk
children from all cultures to learn English.
Nicholas Gonzalez is this year’s celebrity
guest. He has been invited to read a selection
from his favorite Latino author. He will read
selections from The Devil’s Highway/El Camino
del Diablo by Luis Alberto Urrea in English and
Spanish.
Gonzalez is currently on a series called the
“O.C.” He also appears on PBS American
Family and stars on “Resurrection Blvd.”
as a boxer.
Dr. Jess Carreon, chancellor of the Dallas County
Community College District, is the chairperson
of Latino Reads.
