Volleyball team set to dig in next year

Short season ends with one win; is this the start of something bigger?

Women’s volleyball recently capped off its season at North Lake College. The first team to compete competitively in three years has set the table for the future.

Coach Steve Cummings led 10 ladies though the learning process of a beginning sports program.

With no recruiting and using only current eligible students, the season ended with a 1-9 record. The stepping-stone is in place.

“The season was put together at the last minute,” said Cummings. “We only played a short 10-game season for starters. We came close to getting that second win.”

Next year’s squad will include a few extra players and Cummings will have the ability to recruit. A full 32-game schedule will accompany the new challenges of a sophomore season.

Responding to how he will build for next year’s team, Cummings said, “One day at a time. We’ll build a quality, competitive program, as with all sports.”

Returning will be one of this years All-Conference and All-Region player, Nia Young.

“Nia is a solid volleyball player,” said Cummings. “Next year should produce a few award-winning players like her.”

Give credit where credit is due. Cummings deserves it for an effort-filled start to North Lake’s new volleyball team.
