Riding the air waves

Listening to the radio can be both entertaining
and informative, especially when you’re
stuck in traffic. If you’re listening to
Sunny 97.1, chances are the voice of a North Lake
student may be guiding you to your destination.
Jasmine Sadry, a former staff writer for the
News-Register, attends both North Lake and University
of North Texas, majoring in broadcast journalism.
Before going to school, she works for Sunny 97.1
FM and The Edge 102.1 FM as a traffic announcer.
It’s not easy. Her job requires responsibility
and dedication.
Jasmine wakes up daily at four in the morning,
but she doesn’t mind. But radio is something
she’s always wanted to do. She gives the
following advice to other students interested
in this field: “Internships are a great
way to get your foot in the door” said Jasmine.
In fact, Jasmine started her career that way.
She was an unpaid intern at Fox Sports radio,
and then moved her way up to a producer position
on The Morning Show, a local and a national syndicated
show. That internship landed her a job at Sunny
97.1 as a traffic spotter.
A traffic spotter goes out and investigates any
juicy information before it’s heard on the
radio, Jasmine said. They (spotters) are out and
about looking for any accidents or heavy traffic.
They then report it to the audience. Jasmine said
that during her internship she was asked to do
all sorts of things. “I had to get coffee,
get material for the show and go to press conferences.”
Most importantly, she had to edit, cut and reedit
the show.
So if you’re interested in the broadcasting
field, or any field for that matter, it’s
wise to go to different companies and inquire
about internships.
Jasmine is proof that when you demonstrate hard
work and dedication, it can lead you to a successful
career.
