Today’s Low rider jeans may appear to be created by pop singing sensations such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera but they have actually been around for over 40 years.

Ask anyone from the 1960s and they’ll claim low riders as bell-bottoms from their generation. Only 40 years ago, the controversy involving these “hip hugging” pants wasn’t about the exposure of underwear. It was the navel that had parents in an uproar.

Low riders are, more than ever, causing stirs all around the world. This month, Democratic Delegate Algie T. Howell proposed a bill into law in the Virginia Legislature to ban the jeans and establish a $50 fine to “anyone whose boxers, briefs, or thongs peek above their pants or skirts.”

The bill passed the state House but was killed by a Senate committee in a unanimous vote.
