Chili Cookoff to benefit
tsunami victims
The Journalism Club will host the Fifth
Annual Chili Cookoff March
7 in the area in front of the bookstore.
Those wishing to taste the chili may purchase
tickets for 50 cents each. Proceeds will benefit
the Student Emergency Need Scholarship
Fund which provides financial relief
for DCCCD international students affected by the
tsunami tragedy.
The chili does not have to be cooked on site.
It can be made at home and brought to school in
a Crockpot. Participants will be assigned numbers
for judging, which begins at noon.
Last year’s judges are returning. They
are Brent Dudenhoeffer, Len
Kubicek and Kent Reppond.
First prize is a $50 gift certificate to Moe’s
Southwest Grill; second prize is four
tickets to Disney on Ice March
30-April 3; and third prize is 5-day meal card
from Subway.
During the cookoff, the Student Government
Association and will formally announce
the college’s new mascot. Moe’s Southwest
Grill will give away free samples off their menu.

Texas authors scheduled for
Writers’ Fest
North Lake College’s Creative Writing
Program, under the direction of Dr.
Nancy Castilla, will present its first
annual Writers’ Fest March
30 and 31.
Author Jane Roberts Wood and
The Dallas Morning News writer Bryan
Woolley will speak from 12:30 until 1:30
in the Gallery, followed by a reception and book
signing on March 30.
Later that evening at 7:30 p.m., Cleatus
Rattan, the Poet Laureate of Texas, will
speak, followed by a reception and book signing.
On March 31 from 12:30 until 1:30, Rattan will
return for a session with author Tom Dodge.
At 7:30 p.m. that evening, author/journalist
Carlton Stowers will speak, and
a reception and book signing will follow.
The sessions with the writers are free and open
to the public. Classes are encouraged to attend.

workshop presentations, upcoming deadlines, and
commonly used forms online at eCampus.
The International/ESOL Student Advising
Center is listed under
“My Organizations” for all F-1 students
who log in. International students are also advised
to sign up to receive a dcccd.edu e-mail address
at https://www1.dcccd.edu/netmail/input_ssn.cfm
and use that as their official email address so
that the e-mail they receive from the International
Center remains confidential and avoids being blocked
by spam filters.
The International Center eCampus site provides
a wealth of information and resources to serve
students 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Shirley Thompson honored
with teaching award
At the annual meeting of the Texas Mathematical
Association of Two-Year Colleges, which
met in conjunction with TCCTA in Austin, math instructor
Shirley Thompson was honored with
the award for Execellence in Teaching.
The competition for this award, which is given
annually, is statewide and the winner is submitted
for consideration in the Southwest regional competition.

scholarship recipients announced

Status Report
Correction/Clarification
In the January issue of the News-Register,
the students pictured at left at the Winter Wonderland
Fiesta were incorrectly identified as representing
the Phi Theta Kappa table.
The students, Guss Mask, Gracie Brauser, Dawn
Lassiter and Hanna Worede, were part of the Student
Government Association.
IN MEMORY
Charles Andrew McAvoy
North Lake College students are mourning the loss
of Charles Andrew McAvoy, 20, who passed away Dec.
17, 2004, at his home in Flower Mound.
Charles was a 2004 graduate of Flower Mound High
School and a student at NLC. He is survived by
his parents, Ronald and Cathrine McAvoy, his grandmothers,
Madelyn McAvoy and Cathrine Fisher; and numerous
aunts and uncles.
