Student Programs and Resources (SPAR) and Liberal Arts sponsored North Lake College’s first annual “Tell Us Your Dream” essay contest.

Drena Settles, SPAR program specialist, wanted students to speak out about their dreams after reading Martin Luther King’s, “I have a dream” speech. She came up with the idea of having a campus-wide contest, which every student could enter. The essay word count was 250 words or less, and the deadline was Feb. 18.

The essays were judged by four faculty members: Brenda Dulan, Mary Johnson, Avis Rupert and Katherine Villarreal.

They were read at the African American Read-in on Feb. 22 in the Gallery.

The winners of this year’s contest are: First Place: Raktida Siri; Essay Title: “I Am a Girl From Thailand”; Prize: $50 and a student notebook kit from Follett’s.

Second Place: Cleria Ndayiziga; Essay Title: “I Have Seen It Happen!”; Prize: $30, pocket calendar, and $5 Subway gift certificate.

Third Place: Cassey Sanchez; Essay Title: “Dreams, Where Do I Begin?”; Prize: $20, pocket calendar, and $5 Subway gift certificate.
