Job fair, talent show, International Day among activities planned

The month of April showers North Lake students with exciting events. Here’s a rundown of activities for the last full month of school.

On April 4 & 5, students can go by the Student Programs and Resources office in A-223 to cast one vote for Teacher of the Year. Voting hours are between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Full-time and adjunct teachers are eligible for the award.

Career Services will hold a job fair April 6 in the Gallery between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

“We are anticipating 60 or more employers from the DFW area,” said Crystal Cartridge, a career planning and placement specialist.

Students who register and fill out an evaluation will be entered in a drawing to win a $250 scholarship. A grand total of $1,000 in scholarships will be given away—drawings will be held hourly.

SPAR will host a Talent Show April 7 in the Courtyard from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and admission is free. Students who are interested in signing up can visit the SPAR office, A-223, between 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.

“The deadline for entering is April first,” said Carrie McGuire, a student program specialist. “Any lyrical music needs to be turned in at this time so that it can be reviewed. All students, even staff, and faculty can participate,” she said.

International Day will be held April 8 on the patio outside the cafeteria. On this colorful day, NLC students from around the globe wear their traditional apparel. The event features entertainment, food, music, and a fashion show. Students from different cultures will have booths set up with interesting information about their native lands.

International Day events will be held in the cafeteria area from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and students interested in participating need to contact Wanda Whiten in the International Center by April 1.

“There is not a specific criteria on what can be incorporated,” said Whitten. “All students are encouraged to participate, and I am open to creative ideas,” she said. Whitten can be reached at 972- 273-3385 or by e-mail at wsc7704@dcccd.edu.

Students will be honored on April 20 at the annual Student Recognition Day event. SPAR and faculty members will recognize students’ achievements for the academic year. The ceremony will be held in the Performance Hall at 12:30 p.m.

On April 29 at 7 p.m., SPAR will hold an Award Banquet, where members of the Student Leadership Institute, North Lake students, and others will be recognized for their year-long efforts and service.

With the busy month ahead, don’t forget to study hard because finals are just around the corner. Final Exams will be held May 9-13 and graduation is May 12.
