Forensics Team wins awards
On Feb. 18-20, the NLC Forensics Team traveled to Houston to compete in the Houston Area League of Forensics (HALF) Spring Fling Speech Tournament, hosted by Rice University and the University of St. Thomas.

The following students received awards and also Qualified for the National Forensics Association’s National Competitive Tournament: At the Rice University portion of the competition, Amy Lamb took sixth place in Poetry, and Johnny Noel took sixth place in Impromptu Speaking.

In the University of St. Thomas portion, Amy Lamb took second place in Prose and fifth place in Poetry. Jonathan Bruce won sixth place in Communication Analysis. Glen Sovian received Excellent Ratings in his event.


Motivator speaker to visit North Lake March 29
Delatorro L. McNeal, II, voted one of the top four “Best Campus Speakers of 2004,” will speak at NLC March 29 at 1:30 p.m., in the Performance Hall.Delatorro L. McNeal, II, voted one of the top four “Best Campus Speakers of 2004,” will speak at NLC March 29 at 1:30 p.m., in the Performance Hall.

Sponsored by SPAR, the empowerment expert will talk to students about “all that they were deisgned and engineered to be.”

Chili Cookoff big success
The Journalism Club raised almost $180 for the Student Emergency Need Scholarship Fund at the Fifth Annual Chili Cookoff on March 7.

Frances Foret, a lab coordinator in the Math, Science, Sports Sciences Teaching and Learning Center, took first place honors and a $50 gift certificate to Moe’s Southwest Grill for her “Prime Chili” recipe.The money was raised from the sale of 50-cent tickets, which were purchased to sample the chili recipes competing for the coveted first place ribbon. Twenty contestants brought their Crockpots to campus for the returning judges to taste. Those judges were Kent Reppond, Len Kubiciek and Brent Dudenhoeffer.

Moe’s Southwest Grill gave away free samples off their menu from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., much to the delight of students and staff. There was also free ice cream.


NLC art students to exhibit work at ICTN
This summer, art students from North Lake will have their work on display at Irving Community Television Network, 233 South Rogers Road, from May 6 through Aug. 5.

The artists are: Tim Harding, Mikohl Minkler, Jena Rushing, Pat Sutterfi eld, Ginger Forson, Avli Dalal, Mark Dungan, Teena Kabetzke, Carey Polk, Judy Faue, Sar Urban, Patricia Lambert and Nisha Shah.


Rome Studies receives award
The Rome Study Abroad Program at North Lake received an honorable mention award in the 2005 American Council on International Intercultural Education Achievement Award, recognizing its excellence as a “comprehensive program in global education.”


SGA President awarded prestigious scholarship
Dawn Lassiter, president of NLC’s Student Government Association and a Phi Theta Kappa officer, recently received the 2005 Guistwhite Scholarship of $5,000 from the national Phi Theta Kappa organization. She was one of 20 students selected in this international competition.


Earth Day celebration March 30
This year’s Earth Day picnic will take place in the Courtyard from 11a.m., to 1 p.m. The day’s events will begin with a speaker, then free food will be served. Music will be provided by the North Lake Jazz Band.
