Jaime Coleman, a North Lake College student in the early ‘90s, graduated from Texas Woman’s University with a bachelor’s degree in biology.

But on March 10, she was back on campus participating in the college’s Health Fair.

“Being at North Lake College was great,” she said. “ The whole experience was wonderful.

“I would have stayed at North Lake College if they would have had a nursing program.”

Since graduating from TWU, she has been working as a clinical research coordinator at Baylor. She is part of a team with other coordinators who conduct clinical research trials for pharmaceutical companies.

Coleman said that this effort takes place to assist in the passage of new drugs and clinical trials to find uses for existing drugs for the FDA.

Clinical trials are a way to research and study drugs, new therapies, medical devices and new ways of using known treatments.

“Our job is to make sure the drugs are effective and safe,” said Fran Collins, a research coordinator like Coleman.

They conduct about 20 studies at one time. Some studies may take months and even years before they are approved.

Since Coleman’s departure, North Lake has instituted a nursing program. For more information about the program, call the Admissions office at 972-273-3112.
