NLC's honor society receives Top Texas Chapter, Distinguished Chapter Award

Alpha Zeta Eta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa made North Lake College shine this year at the Texas Regional and the International Conventions last week in Grapevine, bringing home an outstanding array of awards and honors.

Named a Texas Top Chapter, Alpha Zeta Eta is now in the top 5 of 85 chapters in the Texas Region. The honor society received the Five Star Program Award and Outstanding Merit Yearbook Award. Members also received a plaque for service to the Texas Region.

Dr. Yolanda Romero received the Pinnacle Award for Continued Excellence as an Advisor. It is only the fifth time the award has ever been presented.

Chapter President David Olmstead was inducted into the Texas Regional Hall of Honor for Outstanding Members. He was also awarded the Clifford D. Wood Scholarship from Texas A&M-Commerce.

Jimmy Taylor, an alumnus of North Lake, was named a Friend of Texas. The award is given to non-Phi Theta Kappa members who have helped chapters in the Texas Region.

Alpha Zeta Eta was elected to hold the position of District II Texas Regional Vice President for the next year. The chapter and its chosen representative to the region, Lisa Arellano, will be representing its fellow chapters from Collin, Dallas, Denton, Tarrant and several other counties for the Texas Region.

Dr. Jesus Carreon, chancellor of the DCCCD, was inducted into the Texas Regional Hall of Honor for College CEO/Presidents. This honor is awarded at the discretion of the Texas Regional Coordinator.

UNIX coordinator and instructor Dr. Timothy Gottleber received a standing ovation for his speech on the effects of technology and popular culture on society at the Texas Regional Convention.

At the International Convention, Alpha Zeta Eta followed the convention theme, “Catch a Shining Star,” by winning several awards and honors. North Lake’s honor society received the Distinguished Chapter Award, placing them in the top 25 of more than 1,200-plus chapters around the world. Members also accepted the Chapter of Service award, and the 2004 Pinnacle Silver Chapter Award for membership growth.

North Lake President Dr. Herlinda Glasscock, was one of 25 college presidents to be awarded the Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction.

Dr. Yolanda Romero received a Continued Excellence Award for Advisor. Barbara Hromadka was named Distinguished Chapter Officer.

If students would like to get involved with the award-winning chapter, they can attend meetings, member or not. The chapter meets three Fridays a month at 4:30 p.m. in A-206.
