Hollywood's Summer Slate
By Casey Cavalier
Staff Writer
Sorry fans. You will not see the long-awaited
release of Doom this summer. October 21, 2005
is the revised release date. In the meantime,
check out these films coming to a Metroplex cineplex
near you.
Cinderella Man
Russell Crowe steps into the ring to portray legendary
boxer Jim Braddock in this Depression-era story
of an underdog with a dream. Rene Zellweger also
stars. (June 3rd)
Lords
of Dogtown
A world without skateboarding? Yes. It was once
a reality. Until its rise as a real sport, skaters
were considered outcasts in Southern California.
The Zephyr skate team (or Z-Boys) helped to bring
skateboard culture to the world. In 2001, Stacy
Peralta wrote and directed a documentary called
Dogtown and Z-Boys. This Heath Ledger film is
a studio version of the same story. Rent the documentary
before or after seeing this film and compare notes.
Imagine! A world without Tony Hawks. (June 3rd)
The Honeymooners
When a 1950’s classic TV show like The Honeymooners
is reworked in an urban version starring Cedric
the Entertainer as Ralph Kramden, it is a sign
of the apocalypse. It may stand on its own merits.
We’ll see. (June 10th)
Mr.
and Mrs. Smith
Let’s all look for the on-screen signs of
an offscreen sizzle when Brad Pitt and Angelina
Jolie star as married assassins. Alert the authorities
if you spot Jennifer Anniston in the audience
taking notes to sharpen her own assassination
skills. (June 10th)
Batman
Begins
In the wake of his parent’s murder, Bruce
Wayne seeks meaning in life and a way to help
others. Christian Bale stars as Bruce Wayne/Batman.
He is joined by Liam Neeson, Gary Oldman, Morgan
Freeman and Katie Holmes. (June 17th)
Bewitched
Will Ferrell stars with Nicole Kidman in this
adaptation of the TV series that ran from 1964-1972.
Shirley MacLaine, Michael Caine, and Jason Schwartzman
round out the cast. Nora Ephron wrote and directed.
(June 24th)
Herbie: Fully Loaded
Lindsay Lohan, Michael Keaton, Matt Dillon and
Breckin Meyer star in yet another summer remake.
Herbie the Love Bug brought a smile to millions
of movie-goers back in the day. Can he do it again?
(June 24th)
War of the Worlds
H.G. Wells. Spielberg. Cruise. And we thought
we did things B-I-G in Texas. Even if you aren’t
a fan of sci-fi thrillers, you will definitely
make an exception for War of the Worlds once you’ve
viewed the movie trailer. (June 29th)
