Three days, 60 miles, one cause

One of the world's leading cancer organizations camps out at North Lake

The Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk is a 60-mile, 3-day walk, and this year Texas was among the 12 states to participate. Thousands of people and communities were brought together for one cause — to eradicate breast cancer.

The walk started at 4 a.m., from Ameriquest Field in Arlington and proceeded to North Lake College.

The second day began at North Lake and ended at White Rock Lake. The third day’s journey was from White Rock to Dallas City Hall.

This was my first year to participate in the 3-Day Walk. Eighty-five percent of the monies raised from the event benefited The Komen Foundation. I was very excited and surprised to learn on June 9 at 2 p.m. that my site to report to at 4 a.m. was North Lake College! My first thought was, “Did someone forget to tell me?”

After that, I geared up for what turned out to be one of the most rewarding vacation days of my life — working with and going the greatest distance you can walk for a good cause.

My assignment was to work with Medical Director Dr. Shaylon from San Antonio, Tara Smith, R.N., Pat from Tyler, and this event’s Director of Continuing Education, Jim Davis, R.N. Jim awarded the nurses a certificate of 10.7 continuing education credits for professional development from the state of Texas.

On June 10, I watched our soccer field evolve into a mini city of approximately 2,000 tents — a mini hospital, a kitchen, showers and plenty of port-o-potties.

North Lake’s Chief Chris Drake and his police officers were superior in assisting the walkers. I am still receiving e-mails about how impressed and satisfied everyone was with the NLC Police Dept.

They went above and very highly beyond the call of duty, and certainly worthy of a Service Excellence for June.

The first step was commitment, and I thank the police and our North Lake community for committing to host this 3-day campsite.

Special thanks also to Texas nurses, doctors, EMTs, athletic trainers and chiropractic team.
