Coppell land purchase part of grand design
Do you live in Denton County and dread the commute
to school in Irving? Fear not, for the drive will
soon be over.
Dallas County Community College District Board
of Trustees agreed to purchase 35.8 acres of land
at the southeast corner of State Highway 121 and
Sandy Lake Road in Coppell for a new education
center. With the site secured and the unveiling
scheduled for early fall, construction should
begin within the next few years.
The location will be called “North Lake
College – North Campus,” which will
offer credit and continuing education courses,
as well as career and workforce development programs.
“The purchase of this land signals continuing
progress for both Dallas County Community Colleges
and the Irving/Coppell area,” stated DCCCD
Board of Trustees Chairman Jerry Prater in an
e-mail to district employees. “It represents
an educational and community partnership that
will help us enrich lives and build community.”
Coppell and Garland are two of the five locations
intended for satellite campuses. Pleasant Grove,
South Irving and West Dallas are the other three
areas of interest.
The $450 million bond program was voted on in
May 2004, making it the first general obligations
bond election in Dallas County since 1972. Voters
approved the five education centers, as well as
expansions and safety upgrades on existing campuses.
Dr. Jess Carreon, chancellor of the DCCCD, said,
“We are very excited and we look forward
to working with the local government, chambers
of commerce, civic community groups and all citizens
who believe that education is the foundation of
our future success.”
