Single parents club looking for members
Organizers of the Single Parents Support Group say that if you have problems bringing up your children alone, or are dealing with the emotional conflicts of divorce, or have never married, or are separated or widowed, a support group like theirs may be helpful. It is an opportunity to make friends with those who are facing similar challenges while expanding the opportunities for your children.

SPSG meets the second Saturday of every month for educational topics or just to discuss problems. The meetings often include speakers who teach various skills about being better parents. Open discussions are welcome, and members often share challenges and successes.

The meetings are held in the library. The room will be posted in the SPAR office. The first meeting will be held Sept. 10. Call Nancee Ott at 972-273-3427.

DCCC seeks input on Disparity Study
The Dallas County Community College District has signed a contract with Mason Tillman Associates Ltd. to conduct a disparity study that will help DCCCD determine whether minority and women-owned businesses in the Dallas area have equal access to the system’s construction, architectural and engineering contracts.

Two community meetings sponsored by Dallas County Community Colleges were held in July to inform area businesses about the disparity study. A disparity study determines whether public contracts have been awarded equitably to ready, willing and able minority and women-owned contractors. In 1989, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in City of Richmond v. J.A. Croson Co. that affirmative action public contracting programs could be enacted if clear and specific patterns of discrimination exist.

The court defined discrimination as a “statistically significant underutilization of willing and able minority contractors.” DCCC’s disparity study will establish whether any significant under-utilization of willing and able minority contractors has occurred.
