Is it a bird...

The TRiO Upward Bound program at NLC experienced an innovative program June 27 that involved an airplane fly-by and a “burn-out “ by a race truck.

At 9 a.m., a BT “Valiant” airplane flew over North Lake’s soccer field 12 times. UB students created markers on the ground using red balloons so that they could measure the time, approximate speed, and distance that the airplane traveled each time.

The second activity involved a truck with 350 horsepower demonstrating a “burn-out” on both wet and dry surfaces. Again, markers were used on the ground, and students used watches to clock the time and measure the distance traveled by the truck.

Guy Melton, director of UB, worked with Larry Zavala, a retired Marine, who is establishing a career mentoring program to present information to students in a different, innovative way.

Hats off to the UB staff and everyone who was a part of this educational event.
