Dual Credit courses allow high schoolers
to double-dip academically North Lake
campus is home to a diverse population. There
are people from many countries, religions, backgrounds
and even people who are still in high school.
Yes, high school. You didn’t know? Most
people don’t.
Along with the many clubs and activities on campus,
there is also a Dual Credit program that many
people don’t know about. This program allows
students who want the challenge to graduate from
high school with an associate’s degree.
“The Dual Credit program is a fantastic
opportunity for high school students to receive
both high school and college credit at the same
time,” said Mrs. Schoen, the counselor at
Honors Academy, one of the high schools that work
with North Lake in the Dual Credit program.
Not only does this allow them to get plenty of
time cut off of their college years, she said,
but it gives them the ability to try things out
so that they can figure out what they want to
do with their lives. It also lets them find out
what college life is going to be like.
The program allows the students this great opportunity
but also allows them to let the idea of college
seep in better so that they will start looking
for their four-year colleges sooner and have more
of a chance of getting in, she said.
“Dual Credit is a great opportunity for
students to experience college life and learn
in a (somewhat) laid-back environment,”
said student Jessica Scaife, who is taking advantage
of the program.
The majority of students we spoke to about the
program believe it to be a great program. The
high school students think it’s great because
they are able to get the type of challenge that
they need.
