Back party spotlights clubs

A major difference between this year’s
annual Welcome Back party and those in previous
years was the introduction of new features, said
SPAR Program Specialist Drena Settles.
The party, held this semester on Sept. 8, allows
clubs an opportunity to sign up new members, to
see what student services are available on campus,
and to welcome the students back with food and
entertainment after a long summer.
One of the new clubs this semester is the Teachers
Academy Club, headed by Sandy Minturn, who created
it last semester.
Matt Brown represented the Fitness Club. Brown,
who has been a bodybuilder since summer 2003 and
won the Texas Lone Star classics, said that his
club conducts seminars on fitness and diet.
For students looking for scholarships, there
is the Phi Theta Kappa club and WEOTA. Phi Theta
Kappa offers scholarships for students with a
GPA of 3.5 and above. WEOTA offers scholarships
for art students.
A college service represented at the fair was
the Health Center. At the Health Center, located
in C-200, students can get free health treatment
and checkups.
One of the attractions was the U.S. Army’s
recruiting table that featured two Dallas Cowboys
cheerleaders. One of the cheerleaders, Monica
Cravinas, said the cheerleaders were there to
support the Army. They were signing autographs
and posing for students and staff to photograph.
The Army also featured a football toss and a
rock climbing wall.
Also featured in this semester‘s party
were two sketch artists. They gave free personal
caricatures to students. One of the artists, Chris
Galvin, has been drawing caricatures for 17 years.
